How to Buy a Dream Horse in 8 Easy Steps

4 Dec

Buying a horse, can be stressful and unsettling. If you follow these eight steps, it will be a fun and enjoyable event.
1. Go to a reputable farm that specializes in the type of horse that you are looking for.
2. Take your trainer with you. It will cost you some money for the expertise and time, but it will be worth it.
3. Safety First. Do not get on a horse, until they ride it, then your trainer rides it, then you ride the horse.
4. Ask questions about everything. Ask about its history, type of temperament with vet, farrier, dentist, other horses, trailering, etc. Ask about its vices, shoeing, saddle, bits used, etc. Ask about its feed, and any health issues.
5. Watch the horse being handled.
6. Pick the horses feet, check its mouth, feel its legs, bridle and saddle the horse by yourself and watch his ground manners.
7. Get the horse vet checked. It may cost you, but in the long run, it will give you peace of mind.
8. Listen to your gut. If your gut says no, don’t do it. Sleep on it. Never let someone pressure you into buying something that you do not feel comfortable with.

Horses can be your greatest purchase. No one likes feeling pressured or taken advantage of, let your mind remain open and receptive. Feel it in your gut whether you should be purchasing the horse or not. Check out the next blog on questions all potential buyers should ask before buying a horse. 100% agree go with your gut! It’s definitely a feeling you get when you see the right horse, it’s “love at first sight.”. And sometimes you have to look at what the horse could be especially if you are on a budget. Some of the nicest horses have had rough starts. Temperament is number one, everything else can be improved!
