The Most Beautiful Prayer

Quest and Emily, our side walker.

Quest and Emily, our side walker.

He was three years old the first time I met him, and he was undoubtedly the most beautiful child I had ever seen. He was here for equine therapy because his parents had heard that this therapy could help their son speak and interact with this world. Classified as Autistic, they were heart broken over the weight that this classification carried.

As time passed, he was identifying parts of the horse and riding his beloved Quest, but still no speech. I would ask him to point to the pony’s ears, tail, mane, saddle, reins, and he would point to all of the parts. Then one day, I picked up Quest’s ample tail and said, “What is this?”

“A tailbone!” he sang. These were his very first words! His parents were crying and he was staring at us with wonder.

That day was magical and I replayed his words in my mind througout the week. Then I got a call from his father, “Miss Jill, Ezekiel would like to pray before we ride on Saturday, is that ok with you?”

“What a miracle!  I would love it if he prayed!” I yelled in the phone with excitement. We both laughed and his father promised that they would  be working very hard on this.

That Saturday was beautiful because Ezekiel was walking with determination towards us. We gathered in a circle and grabbed each other’s hand and Ezekiel sang, “Jesus, beeeee with meeeee! Amen”

All started to cry at this miracle. Then we all said in unison, “That was the most beautiful prayer!”
